Choctaw was chartered before statehood and still sits on its ridge of post oak and blackjack east of Oklahoma City, where the crosstimbers thin into acreage lots. Saturday morning is the town's own hour — trucks and trailers out early, the creek low behind the park, air still cool enough to work in.
