Atoka sits where the blackjack country starts folding into the Kiamichi foothills, and Muddy Boggy keeps the bottoms green long after the hills have given up. Logan and Sons Co. mows that stretch — lots along the old highway, wide yards out toward the lake road, the places where lawn simply stops and pasture takes over. After a summer rain everything grows at once, so the route bends toward the grass instead of the calendar. The border along the walk is cut clean, the trimmer takes the fence line and the mailbox, and the clippings come off the concrete. On an evening when the heat finally breaks, a fresh-cut yard out here is a fine thing to sit and look at.
