Carter County wakes up all at once in April — one warm week and the dun grass of winter turns and the whole country south of the Arbuckles goes green from Ardmore out past the old oil ground at Healdton. Southern Oklahoma Green Works follows that green as it comes, opening the season with a first cut and staying on it: mowing, edging, trimming and hauling off what the wind and the storms leave behind. Out here the yards are wide and the wind never really quits, so a clean edge has to be earned twice. The work runs through the heat, then turns to cleanup when the color drains back out in November. Same ground, same crews, all the way around the year.
