About McKeever's

When the wind comes hard out of the northwest across the open ground west of Urbana, it does not stop for a county road; it carries the snow along and lays it back down in the drives. McKeever's works those nights and the dark mornings after, plowing, opening driveways, and shoveling walkways down to the pavement. Champaign County storms rarely finish when the radar says they will, so a drive opened at four sometimes needs opening again at seven. The truck goes back out. The reward is small and it is the whole thing: the school bus makes the corner and everybody gets where they were going.
