The Care of Trees

About The Care of Trees

Troy's oldest streets are roofed in maples, and by late April the light reaching the lawns underneath is more pattern than sun. The Care of Trees keeps those shaded yards mown and trimmed — the cut set a little higher where the canopy is heavy, close trimming around trunks, roots and the beds that circle them, the walks cleared at the end. Shade turf is thinner and slower, so it answers better to a light hand and a steady schedule than to horsepower. What you want from it is even green from the porch to the alley, with no bare-looking scalp where a root runs shallow. On a spring evening under those trees, a lawn kept level is most of the picture.
