Lawn commander

About Lawn commander

The Mahoning River makes its slow bend past Struthers, and the streets climb away from it in tiers, each one catching a little more weather than the last. Lawn commander takes the full year on that ground: mowing, trimming and edging while the valley is green, then plowing and salting once the hillside streets turn white. A lawn on a slope has to be cut with intention, and a driveway on a slope has to be cleared with more, so both jobs come down to the same patience. There is real pleasure in a mown yard on a June evening, and in a drive scraped clean before the sun clears the ridge. Same town, same trucks, two different kinds of quiet.
