When the wind swings northwest, Shelby gets what Lake Erie sends south — bands of snow marching across open field with nothing standing in the way to slow them. H I Hardman meets that weather head-on, plowing driveways and lots, cutting paths along walkways, and treating the ice that sets in once the wind finally lies down. Storms in this stretch of Richland County can arrive in the small hours and be finished by breakfast, so the work runs on the storm's clock rather than anyone else's. There is a particular quiet at four in the morning with the blade down and a clean lane of asphalt opening behind the truck. Shelby, Shiloh, Plymouth, Greenwich and Mansfield all fall inside the route.
