Rittman straddles the line between Wayne and Medina counties, and a January storm has never once paused to check the map. J&M Stump Grinding takes winter on in the deep middle of the night, clearing driveways and walks while the neighborhood sleeps. There is a hush to that work: headlights catching the falling flakes, the scrape of steel on frozen ground, porches buried to the second step. By first light the drifts are pushed aside, the paths are open, and the steps are safe to take. A heavy snowfall stops being a problem and goes back to being something pretty to look at.
