Snow arrives in Port Clinton sideways — a squall builds over open water and crosses the peninsula before the radar quite catches up to it. Innovative Excavating runs against that at four in the morning: plowing drives and lots, cutting back the windrow the plow trucks leave across an apron, clearing walks and putting salt down on the ice hiding underneath. The lake hands this town more of it than the map would suggest, and it can come three nights running without apology. What matters is that pavement is bare and there is footing before the first engine turns over. That is the whole job, and it is enough.
