About By the Root Sustainable Landscaping

Out in Palmyra township the ground still remembers the glaciers — long flat fields, straight township roads, hedgerows drawn like seams across Portage County. By the Root Sustainable Landscaping works that ground the way it asks to be worked, mowing on the cool side of a July morning while the dew is still silver on everything. The trim stays tight around mailbox posts and fence lines, and the clippings come off the concrete before the truck moves on. There is a particular satisfaction in the last pass of the day, when the light goes long and low across a lawn and every stripe stands up in it. Spring here arrives slow and muddy and then all at once, and that first cut is the thing that tells a yard the year has started. Come November the leaves pile in the lee of every windbreak, and the cleanups carry them out.
