Farms out around Ottawa township keep their windbreaks — a double row of trees along the north side of a place, a leftover woodlot down by a creek — and in a storm those trees do the same thing they were planted to do, catching the blowing snow and dropping it in a long ridge across whatever lies behind them. Woodland lawn works those properties: the long rural drives, the turnarounds by the barn, the paths from the back door to the truck. Plowing and clearing, shoveling the walks, salting where the shade keeps ice past noon all winter. Deep country snow has a hush to it, and there is something good about being the only engine running in it at six in the morning. By the time the woods are catching the first light, the drive is open all the way to the road.
