The south side of Niles goes very quiet at two in the morning during a storm, the old rail line and the flats below it all one single color. Southside Excavating is awake for it, plowing driveways, opening approaches and cutting back the banks that build along the edges. Ice control on the walks comes after the pushing, because the part people actually walk on deserves the extra minute. Through the winter, whatever the hour, the same properties get opened in the same order. Daylight arrives to find the drives already clear, which is the whole idea.
