Etch-A-Lawn

About Etch-A-Lawn

Newark holds an earthwork laid out as an enormous octagon, precise enough to follow the moon across an eighteen-year cycle — this town has taken geometry seriously for a very long time. Etch-A-Lawn carries that on at a smaller scale, drawing clean lines into ordinary yards: mowing in deliberate passes, edging walks and drives to a hard border, trimming out the corners so nothing looks half-finished. On a bright afternoon a freshly striped lawn changes color as you walk past it. Fall brings the leaf work that keeps those lines readable into November. Grass, cut with intention, will hold a pattern the way paper holds a pencil.
