Mesopotamia keeps a wide green commons at its center, an old-fashioned square of grass with the village arranged politely around it. Colin's Cuts works the yards that spread out from there and down the roads toward the Grand River — mowing, trimming, edging, and clearing away whatever the deck throws. Buggies pass at the pace of a walking horse, and the work keeps a similar unhurried order: one yard finished before the next is started. When the maples turn, the leaf hauling begins and runs until the beds are bare again. It is a plain trade, and it suits a plain, handsome village.
