Turf Tenders

About Turf Tenders

The first real squall of the year comes down out of the northwest off the far end of Lake Erie, and by nine at night Louisville is a town of yellow lights and blowing white. Turf Tenders is out in it, plowing driveways and lots, shoveling and clearing walks, spreading salt at the entries so nobody starts the morning on ice. Night work has a quiet of its own: the two-lane roads toward Marlboro and Paris empty out, the blade scrapes, the banks grow along the edge of the pavement. What counts is what people find at sunrise — a drive opened curb to garage, a path to the door, a lot ready before the first car turns in. That is the whole of it, all winter long, across Louisville and out into the townships.
