Winter comes into Licking Township on a northwest wind that crosses the open ground near Buckeye Lake with nothing much in its way. Double B Excavations and Grade runs the plow through those nights — long farm lanes, driveways that bend twice before they reach a porch light, turnarounds that have to be wide enough for a delivery truck by morning. Walks get opened by hand, and salt goes down at the step where a roof drip keeps rebuilding the ice. There is a real satisfaction in stacking a berm somewhere the melt cannot send it back across the pavement. By the time the sky grays at the edges, the lane runs open from the mailbox to the door and the day can start on time.
