Lancaster sits on a seam in the land: north of town the ground runs flat and farmed, the old ice sheet's floor, while south of it the hills begin their climb into sandstone. Storms cross that open country with nothing to slow them down, and by the time the first flakes reach the west-side streets the county roads are already packing. Bedrock Earthworks works the hour they arrive — blade down on driveways and lots, walks cleared by hand, ice control laid where the melt will set up again after dark. The reward is exact: one black driveway at daybreak in a white county. Snow work start to finish, and finished before the day needs it.
