River fog is the first thing anyone learns about Gallipolis — it lifts off the Ohio at dawn and sits in the streets below the floodwall until the sun clears the West Virginia hills. Winter sharpens that damp into something else: a skim of ice on the town's hill streets, and every grade out of the valley suddenly a serious proposition. Excavating handles the snow work through that season, plowing drives and lots, clearing walkways, and opening the approaches so vehicles can get down to the river flat and back up again. A drive cleared before daylight, with the Silver Memorial Bridge lights still burning across the water, is a fine way to have already done something with the day. By noon the pavement is dry and the river keeps rolling south.
