New Albany's roads run between white fences and long brick walks, and after a night of snow they look like a drawing waiting for someone to fill in the lines. Caines and Associates does the filling — plowing drives and lots, clearing walkways and entries by hand where a machine would gouge, salting so the morning holds. The stretch from Rocky Fork east toward the county line catches wind off open ground, which means an early pass is rarely the only pass. Timing decides everything: go too early and it fills back in, too late and it packs to ice. Hitting that window, storm after storm, is the craft.
