The first mow of the year in Amherst usually lands the same week the ball fields at Maude Neiding Park start filling up again — April, mud drying, everything green at once. Crane's meets that week with cleanups: winter debris raked out, beds cleared, the turf cut short enough to wake it up. After that it settles into rhythm — weekly mowing, trimming around posts and tree trunks, edging along drives, hauling off whatever the mowers leave.
