Amherst is a sandstone town — the stepped gray-buff quarry walls south of the village cut the blocks that built half of Cleveland. February here wears the same palette: stone, low cloud, salt-white pavement. Grounds work in that month means plowing and de-icing, opening lots and walks so a place can unlock on time no matter what came off the lake overnight. When the thaw finally holds, the same grounds get mown, edged and cleaned up, week after week, until color returns to them. It is unglamorous work, and it is the whole difference between a property that looks looked-after and one that doesn't.
