Hall's Mowing

About Hall's Mowing

Ada wakes slowly in summer, the light coming up over the grain bins east of town while the sprinklers are still ticking on the campus lawns. Hall's Mowing keeps yards here — the deep front lawns on the shaded streets, the wide green aprons where the village gives way to corn. A cut done right leaves stripes that catch the low evening sun and an edge along the walk sharp enough to see from the porch. Grass comes on fast after a July rain in Hardin County, and the work is to stay ahead of it so a yard never looks like it got away from anyone. That is the whole pleasure of it: pulling out of a drive and looking back at something tidy and green.
