Long gravel drives climb off the ridge roads above Yorktown Heights, and they are where a storm turns serious first — up top the wind loads them shut while the village below is still just dusted. Blake Excavation runs those hills in the dark, plowing drives and lots wide open, backdragging clear of the garage doors, then clearing walkways down to the step. Salt and sand go where the grade is worst, on the bends that ice over before anything else. There is real quiet up there at four in the morning, nothing moving but the plow light and the snow crossing it. By the time the sky grays, the way out is open, and that is the entire job.
