The city's west edge is the river: the pier, the esplanade, the tide sliding past while a train runs the shoreline north. West Edge Outdoor Services takes its name from that side of Yonkers and works its way up the slope from it — mowing, edging, trimming, mulching, with the raking-out in spring and the leaf haul once the maples let go. When storms track up the coast, the same crew goes out with plows and shovels and salt, clearing driveways, walkways and steps ahead of the morning. Weather off open water arrives fast and doesn't announce itself. The job is to be ahead of it: grass cut before it gets away, pavement bare before it gets dangerous.
