At four in the morning downtown Yonkers is orange lamplight and empty asphalt, the old stone of Philipse Manor Hall wearing a white cap. Colonial Outdoor Solution is out in that hour, plowing driveways and lots, shoveling walks and stairs, spreading salt so the first car of the day rolls out without a thought. Snow arrives here off the Hudson wet and heavy, the kind that packs into a ridge at the foot of every driveway. Clearing it before dawn is the entire point — somebody else's day starts on time. By sunrise the pavement is dark again and the truck has moved on.
