April in White Plains opens on bare ground and closes on something worth walking across. The Sod Father Landscaping spends it along the lawns off North Broadway doing the unglamorous half — the cleanup, the raking out of winter's leftovers, seed pressed into the thin patches, feeding to wake the roots. Then the routine takes over: mowing on schedule, edges cut true, trimming wherever the deck won't fit, mulch laid fresh in the beds. By July the turf is thick enough to lie down on, and by late fall the leaves are off it again. Watching bare dirt turn into a lawn never quite stops being satisfying.
