A guardian keeps odd hours. R & J Lawn Guardians works the east side of White Plains, out where the Hutchinson River Parkway slips off toward Harrison, plowing at two in the morning so a driveway stands open at seven, shoveling walks to bare concrete, dropping salt on the low turns that ice over first. When the ground thaws the same trucks come back for mowing routes, edging, trimming, feeding and mulch, and for the cleanup that hauls winter out of the beds in one long April day. Autumn is leaves, moved while they are still dry enough to move easily. Two entirely different jobs, one habit — get there early, and finish the corners.
