Barcelona Harbor takes the wind first, and whatever Lake Erie has been carrying comes ashore in Westfield a few minutes later. ROCK of WNY works those hours — plowing driveways and lots, opening walks and steps, cutting the banks back before they set like concrete, salting the ice that forms behind them. A squall can lay down a foot between supper and midnight here, then quit and leave the stars out. Getting a place open before the alarm clocks go off is the entire point; the reward is a clean black stripe of driveway at dawn with the harbor still fogged in below. Westfield, Barcelona, Ripley, Mayville and the lakeshore roads are all inside the plow route.
