Lake Erie writes the winter for West Seneca, and it does not consult anybody first — a band sets up, parks over the Southtowns, and drops a foot on one street while the next one over stays bare. Four in the morning is when that gets sorted out, blade down, headlights full of moving white, working a route that has to be finished before the first commute. All-season snow work means being ready in October and still going in April, because around here the calendar means very little. A cleared driveway at daybreak is a small thing that changes somebody's entire day. That's the job, and it's worth getting up for.
