Cazenovia Creek runs dark and unhurried along the edge of West Seneca, and in winter the work here starts long before it catches any light. Plow trucks go out while the streets are still one long blue smudge, so that by the hour the town wakes up the driveways are square-cornered and the aprons are cut clean to the pavement. Come May those same routes turn green and the mower takes over — straight passes up the lawn, a sharp line where the grass meets the walk. There is a particular satisfaction in handing someone back their own front yard twice a year, in two different colors. Snow removal and lawn care, block by block, on this town's own calendar.
