North of Oneida Lake the land lies low and wet — Toad Harbor, Big Bay, the cattail country along Route 49 — and when the wind swings northwest, West Monroe gets buried. Bob Lightaul Lawn and Snow works that weather: plowing driveways, clearing walks and coming back when the second band arrives behind the first. Snow off the lake is heavy and it packs fast, so a drive left until noon is twice the job it was at dawn. The pass gets made early, the banks pushed wide, the edges scraped back to the shoulder where they belong. It's a good feeling to pull away from a driveway that's already open before anyone is awake to see it.
