By four o'clock on a December afternoon, the sun has already slipped behind West Kill Mountain, leaving the hamlet's hollow blue with cold. The stream that gives West Kill its name runs dark between snowy banks beside Route 42, and the side roads climbing toward the Spruceton Valley turn steep and narrow fast. Evergreen Mountain Contracting plows and clears those grades, carving out driveways that tilt and curve where a heavy storm could otherwise keep a car parked for good. The craft is in the angles: a hillside drive given room on the turns, banks pushed back far enough to hold the next snowfall. Out here, a passable road is the difference between snowbound and simply snowy, and that difference is everything.
