A Fuller Service

About A Fuller Service

Storms reach Watervliet from the west over the Colonie flats, and by the time they cross Nineteenth Street they have usually decided whether to be snow or sleet. A Fuller Service works the geometry this city is made of: driveways one car wide, stone steps up to the door, sidewalks that belong to somebody by name. Plowing, hand-shoveling the walks and stoops, cutting a path out to the car, laying salt where the shade keeps a patch slick past noon — the small moves that decide whether a morning goes easily. Down by the water the freight line runs straight and empty, and the wind coming off it drifts the same corner shut twice in a night. By April the work is invisible again, which was always the point.
