Past the city line the driveways quit being driveways and turn into lanes — a quarter mile of gravel between the road and a farmhouse door, out toward Rutland and Watertown Center. Desormo Excavation brings the machinery those lanes require, opening them end to end and stacking the banks high and back where they belong. Larger lots get the same treatment: pushed out, piled clear of the parking, hauled away when the piles start eating the spaces. There is real pride in arriving before the milk truck and leaving a clean lane behind you. Out here, being plowed out is the difference between an ordinary day and no day at all.
