The brick mill walls along the creek in Wappingers Falls were put up by people who worked in weather, and something of that has stayed in the village. Blue Collar Landscaping keeps to it — mowing and trimming, mulch and leaf work and cleanups through the warm half of the year, plow trucks and salt through the cold one. There is a rhythm to a Dutchess County season: April mud, the June flush that never quits, October letting go of everything at once, then the first storm that turns Route 9 white by supper. The reward is visible from the sidewalk — a lawn cut level, beds squared, a driveway scraped down to dark pavement while it is still snowing. Plain work, carried all the way out to the corners.
