Verona's driveways can run a long way back from the road, and at midnight in a heavy snow that distance is the whole job. Schmalz Excavation takes it on with plowing that opens the lane end to end, turnarounds included, so nobody has to reverse a quarter mile in the dark. Walks and steps get cleared by hand, then treated where ice likes to set up overnight. There is something plainly good about finishing a lane at two in the morning, killing the lights, and seeing clean pavement all the way to the barn. When the next band moves through, the truck goes back out.
