Route 5 runs through Vernon like a seam stitched across dairy country, hedgerow to silo to open field. Bechtels landscape and excavation works the lawns along that corridor, mowing, edging and trimming through the growing months so a yard reads as tended as the hayfield behind it. There is real satisfaction in the last pass of an afternoon, when the stripes finally line up with the road and the cut grass smells like the whole valley at once. Spring cleanups haul off what winter left in the fencerows; autumn cleanups hand the lawn back to the frost in good order. It is everyday work on a road everybody drives, and it shows.
