Upper Jay lies low between the ridges, where the East Branch of the Ausable runs cold and loud beside the road and the fog lifts off the water most mornings before Jay Mountain shows itself. The green season here is short and worked hard: mowing begins once the frost pockets finally let go, and by the time the light turns in late August every cut counts for something.
