Snow comes at Uniondale sideways, in off the ocean and straight across the flat old Hempstead Plains, and it never waits for daylight. Garden City Irrigation & Maintenance starts in the dark: plow down, lots and driveways opened before the first cars move, walks shoveled, de-icer at the corners where the wind polishes everything to glass. Summer is the opposite work at the opposite hour — sandy Nassau soil drains fast, so heads get set and aimed, lines get checked for the one that fogs instead of sprays, controllers get dialed to the early-morning window, and the whole system gets blown out again ahead of the first hard freeze. In between there is mowing and trimming to keep a property square through a long, humid green season. Two seasons, one route sheet: the drive cleared at five in the morning, the lawn even and watered by June.
