At three in the morning on Main Street in Johnson City, plow lights are the only color in the world. Speedy's Snowplowing and Lawn Care is out in that hour, pushing driveways and lots open so the first cars of the day roll onto bare pavement without a second thought. Come July the same truck trades steel for blades, and the work turns to mowing, trimming and edging through the long green middle of a Southern Tier summer. Union takes its snow in heavy gray installments and its grass in a rush, and both ask for someone who is already moving. In either half of the year the finish is the point: an open drive, a cut lawn, nothing left to do.
