Seven in the evening in midsummer, and the side streets of Union Springs smell like cut grass and warm blacktop. That hour belongs to (TLC) True Lawn Care & landscapes: the last passes of the day, the mower shut off, the edge along the sidewalk stepped back from and looked at. East of the village the drumlins run in long lines, and the yards set on them dry unevenly — one slope crisping while the low side stays soft — so cutting height gets settled lawn by lawn. Between mowings there are beds to weed and re-mulch, shrubs to bring back into shape, and the cleanups that bracket a Finger Lakes year on either end. The reward is simple and repeatable: a line you could sight down, and a place that reads as looked-after from the road.
