Lake-effect off Ontario runs south down the corridor and parks itself over the hills around Tully, and some days the snow does not quit for thirty hours. W L Paving & Plowing Llc works inside that: plowing driveways and lots, opening them again a few hours later, pushing the piles farther back before the next band arrives, and throwing sand on the climbs that go slick between storms. The name covers both halves of the year, but from November on there is really only one job — keeping people able to leave the house. There is a particular relief in a driveway that is clear at six in the morning while the radio is reading off closings. By spring the lakes let go, the banks sink into the ditches, and the yards come out from under all of it in one piece.
