West of the city the land climbs toward Split Rock, and Nine Mile Creek comes down through Solvay in a valley that catches wind and snow in equal measure. West End Snow Removal is out on those hills at four in the morning in December, when the plowed banks glow orange under the streetlights and the only sound is a blade finding pavement. Driveways get pushed clean, walks get shoveled, and steps and aprons get salted before the ice has a chance to set up. The grades out this way do not forgive a half-cleared drive — a car either makes it up or it doesn't. Getting people out on time, storm after storm, is the whole ambition here.
