Up on Tipperary Hill the traffic light wears its green on top, and the driveways run short and steep off the streets below it. H&J lawn and snow keeps both ends of the calendar there: the mowing and trimming that fill the long light of July, and the plowing that opens a hill drive before the salt truck ever turns the corner. A slope asks for its own method — cut across it, never down; push the snow uphill and stack it where it won't slide back by morning. In November the truck that carried a mower carries a blade instead, and the work changes shape without changing hands. West Side dooryards are small, and small is exactly where care shows.
