City lots on the North Side are small, square and particular — a strip of grass out front, a patch behind the garage, a terrace between sidewalk and curb that nobody quite knows what to do with. Dr Janitor And Landscaping treats all of it as worth doing right: mowed close and even, trimmed around the posts and the porch stairs, edged so the concrete keeps its shape. Up near North Salina Street the blocks are tight and the summer air smells like bread and cut grass at the same time. In spring the cleanup clears out the sand and grit the plows left behind; in fall the leaves come off before the first freeze pins them down. A small yard kept sharp changes the feel of an entire block.
