North of the city the land runs in drumlins, long low humps left behind by the ice, and the wind off Lake Ontario comes over them loaded and drops what it is carrying on Cicero and Clay and everything downwind. CNY Snow Plowing runs into that with headlights on and the blade angled, opening driveways, clearing lots, cutting paths to the mailbox and the side door. Sunrise in a Syracuse February is a slow gray suggestion rather than an event, and most of the work is already finished by the time it happens. The trick is returning through a storm instead of waiting it out, so nothing ever gets deeper than it has to. Somebody leaves for work on time, and never knows how early the day started.
