October along Hylan Boulevard turns the sweetgums red one block at a time, and by the weekend the lawns of New Dorp have vanished underneath them. Steve's Landscaping & Lawncare Inc. clears all of it — leaves hauled off, beds cut back, a final mow that leaves the turf short and tidy for the cold. Through the warm months it is the ordinary weekly circuit: cutting, trimming, edging along the sidewalk until the line is straight enough to sight down. Then the wind swings northeast and the blade goes on, for driveways, walks and lots that have to be passable by six in the morning. A whole year of one yard, start to finish, is a good thing to be responsible for.
