Salt air comes off South Beach and works on everything — it stiffens the hedges, it pits the ironwork, it teaches the lawns near the boardwalk to grow their own way. Carmelo's landscaping corp keeps those Dongan Hills and Midland Beach properties on both sides of the year: mowing, edging, trimming, mulching and cleanups through the growing months; plowing, shoveling and salting once the boardwalk goes white and the gulls sit hunched along the rail. Sea wind means wet snow, heavy on a shovel and quick to freeze at the lip of a driveway. They cut it back to the concrete anyway. Two seasons, one set of streets, learned by heart.
