From the Rosebank streets the Verrazzano stands over everything, and on a snowy night its cables come up out of the dark strung with light. Bianco's Landscaping & Masonry runs snow there and through the blocks below Bay Street — plowing driveways and lots, shoveling walks and stoops, salting the brick and bluestone that turns slick before anything else does. Masonry teaches you where water goes, and that knowledge pays out in January: you treat the low corner first, before it becomes a rink. There is a moment at the end of a route when the last set of steps has been swept down to the tread and the wind off the Narrows is the only thing still moving. Then home, briefly.
