Catskill cold settles into the valleys around Stamford and stays put — snow that fell in December is still there in March, packed and blue in the shade. Mike's Improvements works the winter inside that: plowing driveways on the hill roads toward Grand Gorge, shoveling steps and the path to the door, sanding and salting the pitched drives that glaze over in every freeze and thaw. Storms track up from the southwest and can pile in overnight, so the truck heads back out before daylight. The whole job comes down to one thing — a way in and a way out, no matter what fell.
